Computer Engineering, Career and Education
Computer engineering is the discipline concerned with the development of computer systems, reason why it is sometimes referred to as computer systems engineering. The field combines several areas of electrical engineering with computer science. The professionals working in this industry are referred to as computer engineers and they usually have benefited from intensive training in electronic engineering, hardware and software integration as well as software design. Their level of expertise supersedes the one of individuals who only studies software engineering or electronic engineering. Moreover, the computer engineers are involved in different levels of working with the software and hardware aspects of computing. Their work includes designing individual microprocessors, personal computers and it may get to developing circuit design and supercomputers. The industry is more about how the computers integrate into a larger picture and not only about how a computer system works.Generally, computer engineers start at the level where they write software and firmware for microcontrollers. They will also often design VLSI chips, mixed signal circuit boards and operating systems as well as analog sensors. The individuals who are willing to pursue a more challenging career in their field of expertise carry on with long term studies and finally get involved in robotics research. This discipline relies mostly on digital systems which are used to control and monitor electrical systems such as communications, sensors or motors.
Computer engineers are some of the most required professionals on today’s job market. As a result, many universities and technical colleges have included especially designed bachelor programs, followed by masters which are commonly referred to as computer engineering courses. Individuals who are willing to pursue a career in this direction will most likely need to have a sound knowledge of mathematics and sciences, in particular physics. One may start the program with a general scope but they will be able to follow more in depth course later on.
